Each year Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment staff nominate citizens as Public Health Champions for their outstanding contribution to public health in our county, making Weld County a healthier and safer place to live, learn , work and play . The Public Health Champions for Weld County in 2010 are : Nancy Culbreath, First Steps Community Outreach Coordinator The First Steps program is the Weld County Prenatal Plus program and is committed to accomplishing the mission of promoting healthy pregnancies and healthy birth outcomes . Within the First Steps program Nancy has worked tirelessly for 19 years supporting women through often unexpected pregnancies, providing individualized education about having a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby, as well as information and referrals to other community resources that provide valuable services. Nancy has also worked as a Bright Beginnings volunteer since that program began and serves on the Bright Beginnings Steering Committee . She has actively supported the Sunrise Monfort Clinic, coordinating her client's care with the clinic's obstetrics team , and has been an active supporter of the Weld County Nurse- Family Partnership program , sharing information with potential clients about both programs and referring appropriate women to the Nurse- Family Partnership program . Susan LaBonde, a school nurse with Weld County School District Six and Trademark High School, partners with our teen prenatal education program to offer free classes on prenatal health and parenting to teens in need of these services. She is very - more - Weld County Celebrates National Public Health Week - page 2 passionate about teaching and interjects her childbirth educator experience into the classes . Susan is a dedicated member of the Healthy Baby Advisory Committee . At District Six, she is a member of the Child Find team that provides assessment and placement of children birth to 5 who need early developmental interventions. The team also places preschool age children in one of 21 preschool classrooms at district elementary schools to support their early educational needs . Bob Swope and Cynthia Werner, made ground breaking contributions to previously unchartered waters of Hospice and Palliative care surge capacity . Mr. Swope and Ms . Werner contributed their expertise by developing a template for surge capacity for mass hospice care that has been forwarded to Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Administration , Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. Their nurturing contributions to end of life care require skills and strengths most people can 't even imagine . Bob and Cindi understand the reality of a true emergency situation and had the professional courage to participate and contribute to developing best practices for mass hospice care . Cynthia Werner is the Director of Clinical Service for Hospice and Palliative Care for Northern Colorado and Bob Swope serves as the Palliative Care Program Coordinator for North Colorado Medical Center. Weld County Garage, generously supports DRIVE SMART Weld County and their partner Anshor Driving School by providing a classroom every 3rd Saturday at no charge for instruction to driver's education students on safety . They also donate employee time and expertise to educate students about proper maintenance of vehicles including checking fuel levels, changing oil , rotating tires, checking brake pads and other important maintenance tips thus keeping kids safe on the roads while driving their cars . Weld County Garage actively promotes all of DRIVE SMART Weld County's events and programs by posting flyers, brochures and program materials throughout their facility and they contribute to DRIVE SMART Weld County's driver's education scholarship fund . Their time and energy donated to educating young drivers helps to keep kids safe on the road . National Public Health Week is sponsored by the American Public Health Association (APHA) , to educate the public, policy makers and health professionals about the importance of public health agencies and community partners in preventing disease and promoting good health . This year, APHA has issued a call for America to become the healthiest nation in one generation one community at a time .
