Dear Commissioners,
Thank you for contacting me regarding the U.S. Postal Service(USPS). I appreciate your continued service to
Weld County and Colorado. It is an honor to serve you in Congress and I hope you will continue to write with
your thoughts and ideas on moving our country forward.
Over the past several years, the USPS has been mired in debt as mail volume, customer visits, and retail
transactions have declined. Gas prices have increased dramatically and the use of alternative forms of
communication has changed the model of business. As a result, the USPS is considering closing up to 2,000 post
offices and reviewing another 16,000 across the United States. These closures began in March of 2011 and will
continue throughout this year. Unfortunately, these actions may impact some of the post offices throughout Weld
County and the 41b Congressional District, especially in rural areas. It is my goal to work with the Postal Service
to find cost savings in places other than shutting rural locations. I am also looking into regulations that would
keep postal service available in these communities. Post offices are an important part of our rural towns.
The USPS is also considering other ways to save money. Among other reforms, the USPS is considering moving
to 5-day delivery service by eliminating Saturday delivery in order to reduce overall costs. It is possible that
Congress will consider legislation to do so as well.
As legislation is brought in front of the House of Representatives regarding the U.S. Postal Service, rest assured I
will keep the best interests of Weld County in mind. Again, thank you for contacting me and do not hesitate to do
so again when an issue is important to you.
Sincer ,
