RE: EXPRESSION OF OPPOSITION TO DECISION BY UNITED STATES POSTAL
SERVICE TO PLACE MILLIKEN POST OFFICE IN DELIVERY UNIT OPTIMIZATION
PROGRAM
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of Weld County, Colorado, pursuant to
Colorado statute and the Weld County Home Rule Charter, is vested with the authority of
administering the affairs of Weld County, Colorado, and
WHEREAS, effective July 16, 2011, the U.S. Postal Service ("USPS") will place the U.S.
Post Office at Milliken, Colorado, in the Delivery Unit Optimization Program and, as such, will
transfer all mail sorting and delivery operations from Milliken to the Johnstown Post Office, and
WHEREAS, such transfer of operations will either eliminate USPS jobs, or transfer them
from Milliken to Johnstown, and
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners opposes the USPS decision to place
the Milliken Post Office into the Delivery Unit Optimization Program, for the following reasons:
1. The Town of Milliken has been incorporated as a municipality for over 100 years. The
Town has grown in population to over 6,000 at present, a 100% increase over the past
10 years. Because such growth is likely to continue, there is little likelihood that the
number of delivery routes within the Milliken area will remain stagnant or decrease. To
the contrary, it is more likely that the need for mail sorting in Milliken, and the number of
delivery routes within the Milliken area, will increase;
2. The elimination of USPS jobs at the Milliken Post Office, or the transfer of those jobs to
Johnstown, will have an adverse effect on the local economy in Milliken; and
3. A fully functioning Post Office in Milliken will be crucial to future economic growth of the
Town.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of
Weld County, Colorado, that it hereby expresses its opposition to the USPS decision to place
the Milliken Post Office into the Delivery Unit Optimization Program, for the reasons stated
above.
