Mr. Tom Parko
Weld County Planning Department
1555 North 17th Avenue
Greeley, CO 80631
Dear Mr. Parko:
Please consider this letter in support of Bigfoot Turf Farm/Mr. Greg Johnson's'Use-by-
Special Review permit for the baseball field located at 22455 W.C.R. 49, LaSalle,
Colorado. Over the past 10 years Mr. Johnson has allowed various baseball teams from
my organization to use the field free of charge. A majority of the teams were from the
Boys& Girls Clubs of Weld County. There were many years where we did not have the
financial means to provide a travel program to our players because we could not find a
field to play on and if we did we couldn't afford it. In the late 199&s we used the field in
Kersey at Platte Valley High School before they said they didn't have room anymore and
• we would need to move. Searching for another field I met Mr. Greg Johnson and we
have played on Bigfoot Turf Field ever since. He has allowed numerous disadvantaged
kids from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Weld County the opportunity to play competitive
youth baseball. Because of his financial support with the use of his field this was
possible. Without it our program would have folded and a lot of these children would
have only experienced recreational baseball. I am proud to say a majority of the kids that
have played on Mr. Johnsons field ended up playing baseball at the High School level
and several went on to play college baseball.
Please feel free to contact me if I can be of any assistance or help in any way in Mr.
Johnson's request/permit or if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Thomas Gallegos

1-25 has more crashes, U.S. 85 more traffic deaths
But, more traffic deaths occurred on U.S. 85 in 2010
FEBRUARY, 22 2011
BY MIKE PETERS
MPETERS@GREELEYTRIBUNE.COM
Although a recent listing of the most dangerous highways in the state mentions Interstate 25 as it passes through
Weld County, the head of the Colorado State Patrol here said U.S. 85 is probably more dangerous.
"We had only two deaths on 1-25 last year, from Colo. 7 up to the Johnstown exit," said CSP Capt. Paul Matzke.
"We haven't had any deaths on that section of highway this year."
The stretch of 1-25 on the "Most Dangerous" list runs from Weld County Road 6 to Colo. 14 at the Fort Collins
exit.
On last year's fatal accident lists, it shows eight people died in seven crashes on U.S. 85, and three died in two
crashes on Weld County Road 49, also known as the Keenesburg Cut-Off. The other deaths in Weld County were
on county roads or in some of the towns and cities of the county.
But while 1-25 doesn't have as many deaths, Matzke agreed there were more crashes on the major highway.
"That's because it carries an average of 100,000 vehicles every day," he said. "But we're concentrating on that
highway and finding ways to cut down on those crashes."
• He said the Colorado Department of Transportation's widening of 1-25 has allowed for less crowding of traffic,
and a cable separating the north and south highways has stopped vehicles from crossing into the opposite lanes
and causing head-on collisions.
The State Patrol has also started new programs and efforts to reduce crashes on the busiest highway. Teaming
with troopers from the Larimer County office, they've begun a program called "75 means 75." It means troopers
will concentrate on 1-25 and ticket drivers for traveling just a few miles over the 75 mph speed limit.
During the winter, if a snowstorm is predicted for the area, Capt. Matzke said they will concentrate more
officers on the 1-25 area, from both the Weld and Larimer State Patrol offices, so when there are crashes they
can clean up the wreckage quicker and get it off the highway before other vehicles are involved.
The worst year in Weld County history since they've been keeping records was 2004 when 92 died on Weld
roads. That high number resulted in stepped-up enforcement and programs to cut down on fatal crashes. In
addition to the Colorado State Patrol programs, the Weld County Sheriff's Office increased the number of traffic
units on county roads from five to 10 cars.
So far this year, there have been three traffic deaths in Weld County.
