Mail 327 Golden, Colorado 80401 Dear Mr. Wallace: On October 31, 1978, Cultural Resource Consultants Inc . contracted with the Coors Industry Inc. , to provide a cultural resource survey of the site of a proposed coal mining operation in Weld County, Colorado. The work was performed under Purchase Order No. 20884 J 40890, and Colorado State Antiquities Permit No. 78-6. The purpose of the survey was to ensure compliance of the project with all relevant Federal and State laws concerning archaeological and historic sites , including the State Antiquities Act of 1973 (CRS 1973, 24-80-401 to 410) , the State Register of Historic Places Act of 1975 (CRS 1973, 24-80. 1-101 to 102) , the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended, and 36CFR800. This letter and accompanying material will serve as our final report. The research design consisted of a literature search supplemented by on site inspection by archaeologists of all ground to be disturbed by the proposed mining activities . The National Register of Historic Places was consulted as well as the Inventories of Historic and Archaeological Sites maintained by the Colorado State Historic Preservation Officer. 8614 YUKON STREET,SUITE 301C ARVADA,COLORADO 80005 (303) 422-3553 -2- All such sites were to be recorded. Floyd Patterson, Ph.D. served as Principal Investigator, performed the historical research, and administered the project. Robert Williams supervised the archaeological field work, assisted by Kirk Butterbaugh. Field work was performed November 1-6, 1978 . The proposed mining operation is to take place in south-central Weld County, Township 3N, Range 64W, S 4/5 Sec . 25, Sec . 26, NE Sec. 35, and Sec. 36. The project area was surveyed on foot, generally in thirty meter transects . Some areas were inspected more intensively, in particular 'blowouts , ' ridge- lines and all areas of high erosion or high ground visibility. Topographically the project area lies in the Great Plains between 4800 and 4900 feet elevation; it is generally quite flat but includes some areas of gentle sand hills . Subsurface water is indicated by numerous windmill-driven pumps in the area . The nearest surface water supply is Box Elder Creek, approxi- mately four miles to the west. It is a seasonal stream and was dry at the time of survey. No evidence was noted of any water erosion effects on the ground surface. At the time of survey the project area was free of any standing or flowing water, stream beds, or gullies. Wind erosion, however, is clearly present in the form of sand dunes and 'blowouts , ' depressed areas where the surface has lowered by erosion. Ground cover consists largely of sagebrush (Artemisia) , and tumbleweed (Cycloloma Atriplicifolium) , with some cactus (Opuntia) and grasses. Ground visibility averages about 507, varying from about 20% in some grassy areas to 100% in eroded areas . The surface is a fine, readily wind blown sand. No sites are recorded for the project area in the State Inventories of Archaeological and Historic Sites , or in the National Register of Historic Places . No evidence of cultural resources was observed during the field survey. Extensive signs of recent human activity were noted, in particular, wind- mills , water tanks, fences, roads and cattle herds . These were judged to be of no significance due to their modern construction. This lack of prehistoric materials contrasts with some areas of Weld County, such as the Pawnee Grassland area, where sites are relatively common. It is likely that in aboriginal times the Project Area was as unsuitable for occupation as it is now, offering neither cover, water, nor stable food resources . It may have been exploited seasonally in the pursuit of game, but no surface indication of such use remains . -3- Subsurface disturbance may, of course, uncover archaeological or historic materials . In this case the operator should at once suspend operations and notify the office of the State Archaeologist of Colorado.
