Subject: Requesting Help Please - Weld County Property Owner in your District
Dear Weld County Representatives,
I am writing to request your help in a matter involving an oil field seismic company, Seitel Data. Ltd. who has done
damage to my property and refuses to honor the land use agreement they had with me.
Seitel received a permit from Weld County to come to perform seismic testing. Permit #5-SAN, Wattenburg 3-D was
obtained by All State Permit Service on behalf of Seitel - copy attached. My property is located at 18510 WCR 39 -
LaSalle, Colorado. I am attaching the legal map for reference.
Here is a short story of what has taken place:
• This spring, Seitel Data, or one of their vendor companies, crossed an irrigation bridge on my property with three
of their 30 ton trucks and broke the bridge structure.
• There are witnesses who saw these trucks cross the bridge.
• Witnesses also watched as one of the trucks got stuck and broke down the cement barrier on the north side of
the culvert.
• The bridge is now impassable and needs replaced.
• I have tried since May to work with Seitel personnel to get this problem resolved. All I asked for was for them to
repair the damaged bridge.
1
• Seitel has been rude, dismissive, unprofessional, and in general, does not stand by their contractual agreement
with the property owner.
• I have had to seek legal advise - this is expensive and takes forever.
• Recently, more property damage has been realized as one of the neighboring farmers has had to "dig up" and
replace an underground water pipe that runs from the speer canal on my property to his farm. We are believing
this pipe was also damaged by the seismic activity.
• Now I am concerned about the pending damage to the water wells and gas lines that are on my property and on
neighboring properties.
Is there a way you can help me? As landowners, we are at the mercy of all the oil companies and their constituents who
expect continual and easy access to our property. I do not own the mineral rights. As a surface owner, I feel like the
property has become grand central station and I have no control over who enters or where they go.
I have owned this property since 1999 and have never received any compensation for land use from any of the oil
companies (Noble, Kauffman, Encana). I have tried numerous times to reach a surface use agreement with Noble Energy
- no success - I am not pushy enough and do not know my rights as a property owner. I have asked for cattle guards,
gates, road maintenance, etc. and have been routinely ignored or denied. Are there some examples of land use
agreements that you can share with me?
As County Officials for my area, whatever advise or suggestion you can give me will be much appreciated. In addition, I
would like to be involved, or at least made aware, of any meetings or opportunities that come up in the future regarding
oil field activity in Weld County. I understand the value oil field activity brings to the economy. I have family that make a
living in the oil field industry. However, these large and profitable companies are far from being respectful and
compensatory with the small, individual land owner. My land is not nearly as desirable or usable as it was in 1999 when
we purchased for investment and retirement . We need your help and representation in this area.
Thank you in advance for your help in this matter.
Sincerely,
Melony Sandquist
