SUICIDE PREVENTION WEEK i

° / WHEREAS, suicide is now the seventh leading cause of all deaths in the State of Colorado,
r'� and the second leading cause of death among people from the age of 15 to 34 in Colorado, � .'

'*' WHEREAS, in the United States, one person completes suicide every 14.2 minutes, and
, r .
r' WHEREAS, it is estimated that 4.73 million people in the United States are survivors of --4:
,. / suicide (those who have lost a loved one to suicide), and

` WHEREAS, the stigma associated with mental illness and suicidality works against suicide
prevention by discouraging persons at risk for suicide from seeking life-saving help and ` � ,
", further traumatizes survivors of suicide, and '

�i WHEREAS, organizations such as North Range Behavioral Health Suicide Education and -.1•;:'
y [,, Support Services are dedicated to reducing the frequency of suicide attempts and deaths, lei
�c and the pain of survivors affected by suicides of loved ones, through educational programs, -
o research projects, intervention and bereavement services. They urge that we encourage ,.
o• ' initiatives based on the goals contained in the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention by: ,
�• k promoting awareness that suicide is a public health problem which is preventable; o
r developing broad-based support for suicide prevention; developing and implementing ,
• ` strategies to reduce the stigma associated with being a consumer of mental health, ' ' ,
'` , v substance abuse, and suicide prevention services; developing and implementing
community-based suicide prevention programs; developing and implementing community-
,- based suicide bereavement support services; and developing and promoting effective ;
• wclinical and professional practices, and �
, ,„ k WHEREAS, a great many suicides are preventable. r`•'
