P.O. Box 758 Greeley, CO 80632 Re: State Highway 66 and Weld County Road 1 Intersection Improvements Dear Wayne, As you are aware, the City of Longmont is partnering with the Colorado Department of Transportation (Region 4) to design and construct improvements at the State Highway 66 and Weld County Road 1 intersection. Even though this intersection is outside of Longmont's city limits, Longmont initiated this regional project because we recognize that much of the traffic at this intersection is generated by Longmont citizens. This is also, however, an intersection that serves major regional traffic for both Boulder County and Weld County, and we are contacting both counties at this time to ask for participation and assistance with this project. The proposed improvements will include minor widening of SH 66 and County Line Road to accommodate right-turn lanes for the northbound, southbound and eastbound directions as well as dedicated left-turn lanes for northbound and southbound County Line Road. Acceleration lanes are proposed for northbound County Line Road to eastbound SH 66 and southbound County Line Road to westbound SH 66. In addition, the existing span wire traffic signal will be replaced with a pole/mast arm system that meets current CDOT/City standards. The proposed intersection improvements will improve the flow of traffic and overall efficiency of this intersection which will provide a higher level of service to the public. In addition, the improvements will enhance the safety at this location by separating turning vehicles from the through movements. As the design of this project is progressing, the environmental and right-of-way portions of the project have become more complex than originally anticipated. As a result, the most current cost estimate for the planned improvements exceeds the construction budget for this project. With limited funding at our disposal, we may have to scale back the scope of the project to match available funding. q 2012-0089 1 - _ Mr.Howard December 30,2011 Page 2 It is my understanding that Weld County is proposing to assist with the right-of-way/easement acquisition for this project by offering the services of Leon Sievers, Weld County's Right of Way Agent and possible participation with the land acquisition costs. We are excited to partner with Weld County on this project and believe that this is an excellent project with the aforementioned benefits to the public. Any participation Weld County can provide, financial or otherwise, is greatly appreciated and will ensure that all of the planned improvements can be constructed. Longmont is pleased to partner with Weld County on this multi jurisdictional project that will provide capacity and safety improvements that are mutually beneficial to the all the users of this intersection. Micah Zogorski, our Project Manager is anticipating the next project meeting towards the end of January 2012 and we hope at that time, that we can discuss Weld County and Boulder County participation in this project.
