Dear Mrs. Steinmark and Commissioners:
The Weld County Partners organization provides juvenile crime prevention
and allied services to Weld County youth by formation of partnerships
between one adult and one child. The success of this operation and the
consequential saving of taxpayer dollars through reduction of juvenile
delinquency has been enormous. Weld County Partners recently established
a branch in Fort Lupton to serve South Weld County youth who were not
and could not practically be served from Greeley.
One of the agencies referring youngsters to us is the Youth Services
Bureau (YSB) in Fort Lupton. And in fact a representative from that
agency serves as a representative on our board. Needless to say, Fort
Lupton Partners is extremely dismayed by the possible closing or relocation
of the YSB office which is presently in Fort Lupton. The efforts and
programs of the YSB have in our opinion been instrumental in prevention
and control of youthful offender crimes and also have done much to
alleviate and diminish social tensions in our community.
In terms of budget priorities we recognize the constraints the Board
of Commissioners and the District Attorney have and appreciate your
efforts to conserve and preserve taxpayer dollars. However, prevention
programs are more cost effective and in fact less expensive in the long
run than prosecution. Furthermore, Southern Weld has never, in our
opinion, received a proportionate share of County Services.
We as a committee oppose the budget revisions proposed by the District
Attorney and we implore you to exert whatever influence you can to
restore the proposed cut to the District Attorney's budget.
