Summary:
On August 16, 2012,the BOCC rec'd a letter, dated August 12, 2012, from Wendy and Stan Rogers concerning flies
at their home as the result of poor management practices at the Aurora Organic dairy. The Division has also received
several complaints concerning excess flies resulting from poor management practices at the Aurora Organic Dairy
located at 28370 WCR 72. Troy Swain has visited the dairy on 3 separate occasions: June 28,August 15, and August
20. During each visit Troy found the dairy to be operating in accordance with their nuisance control plan, that
includes best management practices, and in good overall condition. Specifically, he has observed that they are
composting manure, releasing wasps (see info concerning release of wasps below), and conducting standard
maintenance procedures to keep fly activity at a minimum. Troy obtained pics of wasps and wasp release points. He
also has invoices of wasp purchases. Based upon his observations of the dairy there is nothing actionable for staff to
pursue. Additionally, the facility has hired a third-party to inspect and audit the facilities pest management
practices. That audit was to happen during the week of August 20. We have not been made aware of any findings
from the audit.
Troy has been in contact with the Rogers'. They believe the source of the flies is the pastures used by the dairy.
The Rogers' have agreed to contact him the next time flies are a problem again. The pastures have standing grass
and are outside of USR boundary. Troy also observed that most neighboring properties has some sort of livestock.
The facility is considering locating some wasp release shelters near the pasture.

WELD COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS

RECEIVED
Commissioner Rademacher and Weld County Health Department , I have decided to send you some
pictures so you may get a better idea of what we are talking about. Stan and I were both raised and lived
in the country our whole lives we understand that flies are a part of that country setting. But this is
beyond the average fly population that our farm is used to. We have lived here for 18 years. We are not
interested in the fly population at the dairy we do not live at the Dairy. We are glad they don't have a fly
problem at the dairy. But we do. We live directly across from the grazing pasture. All we are asking is
that you verify that the Dairy is in fact utilizing a monitoring system for the surrounding properties and
that they are truly using the wasps for fly reduction. I have not seen any wasp release stations or
monitoring on or around our area at all this season. We have very busy lives and really don't like taking
time out to complain. But when something this obvious is being ignored it's difficult to just sit back and
let it go. I'm pretty sure if this were your house you would want clarification that all that could be done
was being done. And that all that was promised is actually being implemented. The reality of all this is
that they are not going to give me the phone number or the name of the company they are using.
Mostly because I believe they are not using one. As a tax payer in the county I would like to request that
the health department make a few calls and verify the company they are using for the wasp release and
the monitoring systems they are using in our area. Thank You for your time, Wendy & Stan Rogers
