From: Joint Council of Police Officers of Colorado

Dear Editor:
It has come to our attention that the Weld County Sheriff' s department
it currently facing problems critical to the safe operation of needed
police services. It is the opinion of this council that these problems
are the result of three primary areas of concern: ( 1) unequal pay with
respect to equal agencies, (2) insufficient staffing, (3) inadequate
training.
We of the Joint Council recognize the problems intrinsic to each of these
independently, and combined. We feel that the combination of all three
represent a viable threat to the health, safty, and welfare of not only
the officers that must work in Geld County, But those who must be served
by the Sheriff' s department.
There is gre=t need to have the professional police officer adequatly paid,
trained, and the department sufficiently staffed in order to deal with all
forms of emergency and civil problems. How can this be accomplished when
these three factors are ever present in the mind of the officer when he
or she is performin; t assigned duties.
We totally support the specific remidies indicated by the Weld County
Sheriff' s Deputies. We cannot and must not allow these inequities in
such a necessary scrvicelcontinue. We will assist Weld County in any
way possible until these problems ale rectified, and the conditions
stipulated, by the deputies, are obtained.
We are prepired to use, and will use any political, and legal means
necessary to ac ;omplish these objectives, and to insure the safety and
continued support of our fellow officers; to this end we will not fail.
