From: D NELSON [mailto:darlene.nelson@msn.com] Sent: Tuesday, January 29, 2013 8:53 AM To: Jennifer Fuller Subject: County Commissioners' Decision I am forwarding this email to you as it doesn't seem that I can send an email to the individual commissioners from your website without certain software not available to me. I would appreciate it if you would please forward this email to the commissioners for their consideration and forward the commissioners' email addresses to me. Thank you! Darlene Nelson To the Weld County Commissioners: The Colorado Independent recently uncovered a decision by the Weld County Commission to cease providing emergency contraception in county health department clinics. The public were not informed of the meeting where this decision occurred, nor were they informed about the decision after it was made. It is unacceptable that the citizens of Weld County were not allowed public comment on this decision and further unacceptable that no medical professionals were consulted on the veracity of claims that emergency contraception is an abortifacient. If medical experts had been consulted, the Commission would have learned that emergency contraception works just like other forms of hormonal birth control - by preventing ovulation. Another expert could have informed the Commission that Colorado has a clear definition of emergency contraception enshrined in state law. Perhaps they could have also heard that Weld County's teen birth rate is 3% higher than the state average, and because of the Commission's decision, there are now only TWO locations in the entire county where women can access low-cost emergency contraception. Access to a full range of contraceptive options keeps women and families healthy and saves the county month. The Commissioners should revisit this decision, in a public meeting, with expert medical testimony. The women and families of Weld County deserve a commission committed to transparency and a healthy community. Wouldn't it be absolutely wonderful to see what a country we might all experience if every child that was born was wanted, planned for, and loved? I think so! Sincerely, Darlene K.
